Looking back, I find it hard to believe my diet was so restricted before turning vegan. I find that veganism encouraged me to experiment and try new things. So when people say veganism is restrictive, I find it quite funny. It's all about your approach and how you choose to go about it.
Hummus is one of those things I discovered after I turned vegan. Now I simply can't live without it. To give you an idea of how much I love it, I basically spooned out half of this straight out of the blender. I had to force myself to stop, if only because if I finished all of it, I wouldn't be able to take photos and share this awesome recipe with you guys!
I've tried many different hummus recipes over the last 10 years and most are great. I mean, you can't go wrong with chickpeas and tahini anyway. But when I came up with this recipe, I just knew it was the best one. The right amount of tangy and creamy, I believe you're gonna wanna eat this straight out of the jar as well. Best part is, it's oil-free!
I've been trying to use as little oil as possible lately. I don't think I want to go oil-free for the moment, but I realised I was just dousing everything in oil, convinced that they're actually good for you. While that may be the case up to a certain point, they're incredibly concentrated forms of fat and calories. Calories may not always be evil, but it's best to get the best bang for your buck with any food. If you're eating a high calorie food, and if it gives you plenty of vitamins and minerals, then great. But in the case of oils, I just no longer believe they're the superfoods we're led to believe and their nutritional content doesn't rally make up for their high calories. It's much better to get your healthy fats from whole foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds. (Here's an interesting article that sums it all up)
Besides, in some recipes, oils are simply redundant. I guess because oils are a very common staple ingredient found in most recipes, we tend to think they're absolutely crucial. Well, maybe in some recipes. But this vegan hummus recipe is simply perfect without any!
One way to elevate your hummus eating experience is to pair them up with some pita pockets. I used this recipe to make the ones you see in the photos, and they're quite easy to make. Totally recommend!
Add all the ingredients to a food processor or high-speed blender till everything is blended and smooth. That's it!
If your blender or food processor has trouble processing, feel free to add some water 1tbsp at a time to help things along.
